THE PLATA OR 'SILVER' RANGE
This range, located 70 km (43 miles) west of Mendoza , is a perfect training area for mountaineering. Here you can find a number of mountains renowned in Argentina, like: El Plata (6,000m/19,800ft), Negro, Vallecitos, Rincón, Colorado and others over 5,000m (16,500ft); as well as a whole list of 3,000 and 4,000m (9,900 and 13,200ft) peaks that are climbable all year round.
THE DOMUYO VOLCANO, THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN PATAGONIA
Located in the Cordillera del Viento in the northwest of the Province of Neuquén with a height of 4,709m (15,540ft).
From Chos Malal you arrive at Aguas Calientes, a small tourist resort with hot springs that flow from the depths of the Volcano.
The fumaroles, the hot springs and the Patagonian steppes surprise us with their untamed yet accessible beauty.
THE LANÍN VOLCANO
This volcano stands at an altitude of 3,774m (12,450ft) framed by the two glacial lakes Tromen y Huechulafquen.
It is situated within El Parque Nacional Lanín, in the southwest of the Province of Neuquén . The reserve was created in 1937 to preserve the Patagonian alpine forest typical of the area. It is here that one can find the pehuén, a conifer of amazing size and beauty, as well as lenga and colihue to mention only some of the other flora. The local fauna includes the ciervo (deer) pudú (the smallest in the world measuring a mere 35 cm/14in. in height), pumas, fox, the Patagonian otter (huillín), considered to be endangered, and a wide range of birds and fish.
Access to the volcano is from San Martín de Los Andes , a small tourist town surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Besides the buses that go to San Martin de Los Andes it can be reached by plane. The airport is in Chapelco, 25 km (16 miles) away.
